Gospel

From the word “gospel” to answering it, in twelve steps; and a dictionary of every verse where the word stands.

Gospel steps

  1. The word “gospel”Mark 1:1In the world the New Testament was written in, “gospel” was also a word for news of an emperor’s birth and accession. Mark and Paul take that very word to announce Jesus Christ.
  2. Isaiah’s good newsIsaiah 52:7Isaiah sings of a herald crossing the mountains with news that God reigns, in a Hebrew word, basar, that carried bad news as well as good.
  3. The time is fulfilledMark 1:14–15The first thing Jesus proclaimed in Galilee was the gospel, the news that the reign of God announced by Isaiah’s herald had now come near.
  4. To the poorLuke 4:18–21In the synagogue at Nazareth Jesus read from Isaiah 61 and said that the Scripture had been fulfilled that day. The gospel is news that comes first to the poor.
  5. What the gospel says1 Corinthians 15:1–8Paul sums up the gospel he received and handed on. Christ died for our sins, was buried, was raised on the third day and appeared to witnesses.
  6. The righteousness of GodRomans 1:16–17Paul says that in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed, the righteousness by which God freely justifies those who believe.
  7. The gospel of graceActs 20:24Paul summed up the ministry he had received from the Lord Jesus as testifying to the gospel of God’s grace. Salvation is God’s gift, received by grace through faith.
  8. No other gospelGalatians 1:6–9When the churches of Galatia turned to a teaching that added conditions to the grace of Christ, Paul told them it was not a second gospel but a distortion of the one.
  9. To the ends of the earthMatthew 24:14Jesus said that the gospel of the kingdom would be preached in all the world. It spread on the feet of scattered believers and in a conversation on a desert road, and it still goes out through those who are sent.
  10. Not ashamed of the gospelRomans 1:16A crucified Messiah was, to the world’s eye, foolish and shameful news. Paul was not ashamed of that gospel, even in chains.
  11. The eternal gospelRevelation 14:6Where the gospel’s words stand for the last time in the Bible, an angel carries the eternal gospel to every nation. The grass withers, but the word preached as good news remains forever.
  12. Answering the gospelMark 1:15The gospel Jesus first preached calls for an answer: repent and believe. It does not force anyone; it is set before the one who hears.
