Jesus first asked what people were saying. Then at once he turned the question around.

Matthew 16:13–14 · Caesarea Philippi

Who do people say the Son of Man is?

Scripture · the question’s frame
Seen from far above, dozens of people stand in groups talking on the open ground outside a hill town's gate, with laden donkeys and a well, and the snowy ridge of Mount Hermon faint beyond.

When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he put a question to his disciples: who do people say the Son of Man is?

The disciples answered with what they had heard. Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, others Jeremiah or one of the prophets (v. 14). Every one of these answers is respectful, and every one of them puts Jesus down as ‘someone like somebody else’.

The answers today are much the same: a good teacher, a saint, one of the founders of the religions. This guide weighs those answers one by one against history and the records. But Jesus’ question did not stop there.
