When we hear of the apostacy of many, it is a great comfort and joy, that there is a remnant according to the election of grace, which does and shall persevere; especially we should rejoice, if we have reason to hope that we are of that number. …

Note

After a dark passage on the man of lawlessness and the deception of those who refused the truth, Paul turns at once to thanksgiving. God chose the Thessalonians, and His choice reached them as a message. This verse says through what God called them, and to what.

To this He called you through our gospel, so that you may share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

2 Thessalonians 2:14

The first half of the chapter speaks of the rebellion and the man of lawlessness who must come before the day of the Lord, and of those who perish "because they refused the love of the truth" (2 Thessalonians 2:10). Then: "But we should always thank God for you, brothers who are loved by the Lord, because God chose you from the beginning to be saved by the sanctification of the Spirit and by faith in the truth" (2 Thessalonians 2:13). This verse says how that salvation reached them; the next tells them to stand firm (2 Thessalonians 2:15).

is here a genitive with διά, "through": the gospel is the means of God's call. God is the One who calls (, in the aorist), and His call came in "our gospel", the message Paul, Silvanus and Timothy had preached in the city. If 2:13 tells of God's choosing, this verse tells of the road by which that choosing arrived in one place at one time. The goal is glory. is obtaining, coming to possess; Paul used the same word when he wrote that God appointed us "to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Thessalonians 5:9).

The KJV keeps the noun: "Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ." The LSV has "to the acquiring of the glory". The BSB turns it into a purpose clause, "so that you may share in", which brings out that the glory is Christ's own and is given to believers to share. It still lies ahead: in the first chapter it belongs to the day when He comes "to be glorified in His saints" (2 Thessalonians 1:10).

Wesley explains "our gospel" as "That which we preached, accompanied with the power of his Spirit" Wesley. Matthew Henry says the same: "The outward call of God is by the gospel; and this is rendered effectual by the inward working of the Spirit" Matthew Henry. The two men taught differently about election, but here they speak with one voice: God calls through a gospel spoken by human lips, and His Spirit gives the words their power.

Whoever has heard the gospel from another person has heard more than a human voice. The call carried in it points to one end: a share in the glory of Christ.
